Hacks, hacks and more hacks

In a previous post I mentioned all the hacks (nothing new except to this blog) I had added to my blog well, one for what ever reason stopped working and whilst attempting to put it right I totally cleared this blog and in effect had a blank canvas with the exception of all the posts.

So now with a few more hacks than before and most added java scripts being hosted from one place rather than many same for images, hopefully speeding up the page load time, unfortunately due to me being too lazy to host my blog myself I'm still at the mercy of Blogger, whose server is slow at times.

So the rebuild included replacing these hacks

  1. There are now tabs at the top of the page, these show the 5 most frequent tags that I use. The hack for this can be found at Hoctro's Place Showing your Blogger Labels as Tabs with Ramani's Tweak your label tabs from Hackosphere giving the 5 most frequent.
  2. Following from there, when searching my blog via the archive or the tags you will now only see the titles of the posts and a +/- besides them. This allows you to expand and compress each one and hopefully make searching easier by saving you having to scroll through full posts. It means I need to consider titles and tags more. Peek-A-Boo view of posts in label/archive pages is also one of Ramani's.
  3. You will have noticed already that my longer posts now have a 'read more' link at the end, this is another hack from Hackosphere, Selective Expandable posts.
  4. Another that will not be so obvious is Author comment highlighting and notification, this hack does as the title suggests and highlights the authors posts in the comments, you can also send the person who you are responding to an email to let them know. Unfortunately it only works if the person has their email in their profile, it still highlights your replies though.

Now I also have these

A table of contents by Hans at Beautiful Beta I have a feeling anyone who wants to add this hack but who has already got Ramani's peek-a-boo hack will have to add it again afterwards.

Thanks to all concerned with the tabs at the top I managed to add the table of contents link to a tab as well without asking for help.

Now I think I might leave my blog template alone.

Just before I finish with hacks, there is a peek-a-boo bloger navbar hack avalible, I did add it to the blog and it did look good, hoover the mouse over it and there it was ... As long as I was using Firefox, in IE7 the navbar was there only it didn't become solid therefore risking people logging out, flagging and jumping all over the place. So I removed it, something that doesn't work in all browsers is no good.
